Career Path To Become a Data Scientist

Overview

What is data science?

Data science is a process of analyzing a large amount of raw data using various tools, algorithms, and machine learning principles to fetch insights from that data. Later, those insights would be used to make various decisions at high-level management in the organization like finding any new business opportunity or changes in their current marketing strategies, etc.

It incorporates the skills of computer science, mathematics, graphic design, information visualization, complex systems, communication, and business.

Who is a data scientist?

So, as you might guess, a Data Scientist is a professional who has the required skills, and knowledge to work with data to get the desired information. It wouldn't be wrong if I say Data Scientist is among the most lucrative job today.

What does a data scientist do?

The main job of a Data Scientist is Data Visualization. It means, fetching the insight from a large amount of raw data, then presenting it in the form of charts or graphs to the people so that they can understand it easily.

Some examples of data science work are:
  • Video recommendation by Netflix to viewers based on their past history
  • Face tag of individuals by Facebook
  • Automation of digital ads like if visit any particular item on amazon then the google AdSense start showing ads related to those items only when you visit any website.
  • Google search used data science to filter and show best results to users

Now you might be thinking:
  • How to become a Data Scientist?
  • What skills are required?
  • What education is required to become a Data Scientist?
  • What would be the best career path?
  • Where to find the job as a Data Scientist?

How to Become a Data Scientist?

In this article, we are explaining everything from, education, skills, and what would be the right path to pursue this career. Please continue reading.

Skills required to become Data Scientist:

  1. Programming: Python is the most common language that's used in data science, but the knowledge of other languages like Java, C/C++, SQL etc. is expected.
  2. Machine Learning skills: Machine learning is among the core skills required to become a data scientist. Machine learning helps you in building a predictive model like in an e-commerce company you want to predict the sale for the next month based on the data of previous months. Machine learning algorithms will help you to do this.
  3. Analytical Tools: As data science is all about data analytics, so the knowledge of different analytical tools is mandatory. SAS, Spark, Hadoop, R are some popular tools in data science world.
  4. Data Visualization skills: Only data scientist understands the data and their findings, but the they need to explain their findings to the other teams in a simple way and charts, graphs etc are the best way to do that. So, the data scientist must have knowledge of different data visualization tools like ggplot, d3. Jays' and Matplottlib, and Tableau.
  5. Mathematics and Statistics skills: Well, no need to explain, as a data scientist your mathematics and statistics skills should be strong because you need to play with data with different aspects. Collecting, analyzing, organizing and the interpreting the data.
  6. Data wrangling and preprocessing skills: The data you are going to deal with is not only huge but messy and imperfect also. Like the date format somewhere would '22-Jan-2021', and somehow it would be '22/01/2021', same value can be with small letters or capital letters. So, before you start analyzing the data you need to clean that up too.
  7. Business Acumen: It is an essential skill because a data scientist must know about the problems and potential challenges to be solved for the growth of the organization. When they know about the problems, only then they can understand the best use of their findings.

  10. Team Work: As a data scientist, you need to work with many other teams in the organization.

Most of the top institutions are offering a degree in data science, but a degree (UG/PG) in computer science, mathematics, statistics, business studies, finance, and economics would also work. It's preferred to have master's degree at least.

How to be there?

The aspirant can follow the following career path to become a Data Scientist:
1. Get the master degree in data science / mathematics / statistics / computer science
2. Join a specialized course to sharpen your existing skills and learn the core skills like data science. Many online portals also offer you these courses and many of them provide you the certification/diploma/ degree through a University too.
3. Do some practical projects to earn hands-on experience
4. Start looking for a job
5. Ph. D - Nowadays most of the aspirants going after Ph.D. in data science and it is preferred too. So once you get a job and have some experience, think about it also. It would help you in your career a lot.
