Bachelor of Optometry (B.Optom)

Overview

Bachelor of Optometry is an undergraduate program concerning eye care. Optometry is the science of eye care, including eye examination, diagnosis, treatment and management of diseases and disorders of the visual system. 

The course study helps the candidate to obtain profound knowledge related to eye, vision and optics. The course study exposes all the physiological processes underlying vision and optical systems used in the process. The design and manufacture of optical aids such as spectacles, contact lenses, etc. are also covered under the course. 

Bachelor of Optometry is a four-year course containing three years of learning and a year of internship in clinical experience.

Admission process: Admission is based on marks scored by the candidates in board examination and EYECET/ relevant entrance tests. Few institutes also follow the direct admission process.

Further study:
There are PG courses available after the completing Bachelor's Degree programs are- M.Sc. in Optometry and Master of Optometry. These courses are 2 years long (each). If you are interested in further advanced course, the PhD program will be of use to you.

Career prospects: 
This degree promises good job opportunities for the students. The medical organization, hospitals, and medical centers have job vacancies for the graduate optometrist. one can choose to work at Eyecare clinics or ophthalmic department of hospitals, one may work under Ophthalmologists and assist them.  Another popular career option is opening an own Optical shop.

10+2 from a recognized institution with Physics, Chemistry and Biology as main subjects with minimum of 50% marks

The fee structure of the full-time bachelor degree in optometry is generally between 2lakh to 4lakh.
